The imposing structure before you is Nha tho Ha Dong. It stands as a testament to faith perseverance and the enduring spirit of a community.

Ha Dong Church wasn’t always the majestic edifice you see today. Construction began in 1908. It took years of dedication and effort. The church was finally completed in 1917. It quickly became a central point for the Catholic community in Ha Dong. The original land purchase was surprisingly small. It was just 2500 square meters. That’s less than half a hectare. Father Victor Aubert oversaw the initial construction. He later acquired an additional 2500 square meters of land in 1910. This allowed for the construction of a separate church building just 10 meters away. The road in between likely prevented a larger single structure.

The church witnessed tumultuous times. The 1954 Geneva Accords led to significant upheaval. Many parishioners fled south or returned to their ancestral homes. Some families from the Thạch Bích area remained. They had been residing in Ha Dong since the 1940s. In 1955 the church reported only 600 parishioners. This was a drastic reduction compared to earlier times. The numbers later rebounded with migration from surrounding areas in the 1990s. Many skilled laborers and business owners relocated to Ha Dong.

The church’s exterior and interior underwent extensive restoration in 2017. This marked the church’s 100th anniversary. The restoration also included improvements to the various church halls. These were designed to better serve the growing congregation’s spiritual needs. Recent decades have seen further expansion. New church districts have been established to better serve the community’s ever increasing needs. This includes the Nha Tho district Ba La district La Duong district and Man Coi district. The church now boasts multiple groups including four Cao doan five Ban and eleven Hoi. This serves to highlight the vibrant and active nature of the Ha Dong Church community.

Today Nha tho Ha Dong serves not just as a place of worship but a community center. It reflects the enduring faith resilience and growth of the people of Ha Dong. It continues to serve as a beacon of hope and a testament to the power of community in the face of change. It is a living history that continues to unfold with each passing day.
