Seeking immortality? Look closely at the Iron Pillar of Delhi. It stands tall and defiant against the ravages of time. The Iron Pillar of Delhi isn’t just a pillar. It’s a testament to the ingenuity of ancient Indian metallurgists. Erected in the Qutb complex around 400 CE, during the reign of Chandragupta II, the Iron Pillar of Delhi has stood the test of time. It has witnessed the rise and fall of empires, the clash of cultures, and the relentless march of history. The pillar originally resided in a Vishnu temple, possibly near Udayagiri, before its journey to Delhi. An inscription, etched 7 feet above the base, proudly proclaims its dedication to Vishnu. The six-ton pillar, a marvel of forge welding, rises to a height of 23.5 feet, part of which is buried below ground. The inscription names a king named Chandra, believed to be Chandragupta II himself. Interestingly, a later inscription notes the involvement of King Anangapala in 1052 CE, perhaps linking him to the pillar’s move to Delhi. Now, let’s talk about the elephant in the room, or rather, the lack of rust on the pillar. While Delhi’s dry climate plays a role, the real secret lies in the pillar’s chemical composition. High phosphorus content in the iron reacts with the environment, creating a protective film. This iron hydrogen phosphate hydrate shield, a mere one-twentieth of a millimeter thick after 1600 years, prevents further corrosion. The Iron Pillar of Delhi is more than just rust-free metal. It’s a whisper from the past, a symbol of ancient wisdom and a challenge to modern science. Even a cannonball strike, likely ordered by Nadir Shah in 1739, failed to topple this resilient monument. As you stand here, imagine the countless hands that have touched this pillar. Think of the stories it could tell, the secrets it holds. The Iron Pillar of Delhi is not just a sight to behold. It’s a connection to history, a marvel of science, and a symbol of enduring strength.
