Founded in 1956 at the behest of Premier Zhou Enlai himself, the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China boasts a rich history. It resulted from a merger of the electronics departments of three prestigious universities: Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Southeast University, and South China University of Technology. The university quickly rose to prominence. In the 1960s it was recognized as one of China’s key higher education institutions. Its reputation only grew from there. Today, the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China is a sprawling multidisciplinary institution with a focus on, you guessed it, electronics and information science. What began with a singular focus on electronic engineering has blossomed into a comprehensive exploration of all things electronic. The university hasn’t forgotten its roots though. It still holds the distinction of being the only higher education institution in China that covers all six “National Key Disciplines” in electronic and information science and technology. That’s quite a legacy for one university! What began as a seed planted by Premier Zhou Enlai has flourished into a mighty oak of knowledge and innovation.
