Envision a stone arch embracing the Landwehrkanal. This is the Baerwaldbrücke. It carries the pulse of Berlin across the water.

The Baerwaldbrücke is more than just a bridge. It is a testament to Berlin’s resilience. This structure stands as the second bridge on this very site. The original wooden bridge was erected in 1850. This wooden structure served its purpose for a while. It was replaced between 1876 and 1878. A stone bridge with an impressive span of 18.80 meters took its place.

For a brief period, it was known as Gasanstaltsbrücke. This name came from the nearby gasworks. In 1879, it received its current name. The Baerwaldbrücke honors Pierre Frédéric Charles Baerwald. He was the first administrative director of the gasworks. Baerwald was also a pharmacist. He was a city councilor.

Like much of Berlin, the Baerwaldbrücke suffered during wartime. It sustained damage. In 1952, the bridge was reconstructed. The reconstruction followed historical designs.

Look closely at the bridge’s details. The abutment and main structure showcase yellow bricks. These are accented with striking red bands. This brickwork creates a visually appealing pattern. The reconstruction in 1952 added elegant touches. Two-armed candelabras stand at each entrance. These were crafted according to historical models. Near Carl-Herz-Ufer, you’ll find matching five-armed lanterns.

Notice the bridge’s decorations. On each side of the arch’s keystone are sandstone cartouches. They depict the Berlin bear. One bear is collecting honey. The other is fishing. A simple metal railing lines the pedestrian walkway. Half of the bridge’s width is dedicated to the roadway. Parking is permitted directly on the Baerwaldbrücke. This calms traffic.

In 2005, a memorial plaque was unveiled. It honors Hans Böckler. He was a former chairman of the DGB. The plaque stands near the bridge. It is at the corner of Prinzenstraße and Baerwaldbrücke. The location marks the entrance to Böcklerpark.

You might spot restaurants on ships near the Baerwaldbrücke. These are operated by the van Loon shipping company. They offer tours on the Landwehrkanal.

Southeast of the Baerwaldbrücke is the Urbanhafen. The Carl-Herz-Ufer is a protected historic street. It runs along the canal. Nearby stands a former street cleaning depot. It was designed by Ludwig Hoffmann. Also close by is the Altes Zollhaus. This restaurant resides in a historic building.

The Baerwaldbrücke is more than a crossing. It’s a landmark. It connects neighborhoods. It tells tales of Berlin’s past and present. As you cross the Baerwaldbrücke reflect on its history. Note its architectural details. Consider its place in Berlin’s vibrant tapestry.
