The church’s exterior held a quiet charm, belying the masterpiece within. Chiesetta Santa Maria della Neve stands as a testament to the power of art to transcend social divides. Inside, a vibrant cycle of frescoes by Girolamo Romanino explodes across the walls and ceiling. Depicting the life of Jesus Christ, the frescoes envelop the viewer. The intensity of the pictorial realism earned the Chiesetta Santa Maria della Neve the moniker, “Sistine Chapel of the poor”. Romanino’s work here marked a turning point in his artistic journey. His use of distorted figures, rapid brushstrokes, and saturated colours reflected an avant-garde approach in the 1530s. This unique style further enhances the emotional impact of the scenes. The church’s very location tells a story. Situated at the crossroads of bustling trade routes, the Chiesetta Santa Maria della Neve became a popular pilgrimage site. In the early 16th century, the church underwent renovations to accommodate the growing number of visitors. Two porticos were added. A terminal chapel was built. Three Gothic windows were closed to create more space for Romanino’s grand artistic scheme. As we leave the Chiesetta Santa Maria della Neve, the vivid images remain etched in our minds.
