In 1976, a simple letter announced the birth of the Boston University School of Public Health (BUSPH). It was a humble start, a part-time evening program tucked within the medical school. The goal was clear: to train public health leaders. The B.U. School of Public Health sought to equip professionals with the knowledge and skills to tackle complex health challenges.

The Boston University School of Public Health started small, with just 74 students. Dr. Norman Scotch, the first dean, understood the needs of working professionals. He designed a program that allowed them to continue their careers while pursuing their education. This commitment to accessibility has been a hallmark of BUSPH throughout its history. The initial curriculum focused on practical skills and paired academics with experienced practitioners. Evening classes, held only on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, catered to the busy schedules of working professionals.

The B.U. School of Public Health quickly grew. In 1979, it officially became a school of Boston University. The program expanded to include daytime courses and new concentrations. The school’s first graduation ceremony, held that same year, celebrated the achievements of 46 graduates. This marked a significant milestone for the young institution. The B.U. School of Public Health continued to evolve, adding departments and programs. It embraced its role in shaping the future of public health.

The school’s home, the Talbot Building, has a story of its own. Built in 1876, it originally housed the Massachusetts Homeopathic Hospital. The building’s unique “E” shape is a result of expansions over the years. After renovations in 1998, the Talbot Building became the administrative center for BUSPH. It stands as a testament to the school’s enduring presence and commitment to public health.

Today, the Boston University School of Public Health offers a range of degrees. These include the Master of Public Health (MPH), Master of Arts (MA), Master of Science (MS), Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), and Doctor of Public Health (DPH). The school also offers dual degree programs, providing students with opportunities to combine their public health education with other disciplines. This interdisciplinary approach reflects the interconnected nature of public health challenges.

B.U. School of Public Health has consistently ranked among the top public health schools in the United States. It stands as a hub for cutting-edge research. The school’s research portfolio tackles pressing health issues. From the Framingham Heart Study to studies on gun violence and substance use disorders, BUSPH researchers are making significant contributions to the field.

The B.U. School of Public Health has nurtured a community of accomplished alumni and faculty. Their work has shaped public health policy and practice around the world. From CNN medical reporters to members of parliament, BUSPH graduates are making a difference. The faculty at B.U. School of Public Health continue to inspire and mentor the next generation of public health leaders. They are committed to advancing the school’s mission of improving the health of populations worldwide.
