“The difference is love.” That is the Carmelite Sisters’ slogan and their core values. We are standing before Saint Patricks Convent. It embodies hospitality, compassion, sanctity of life, and shared commitment.

Saint Patricks Convent has a rich history rooted in serving the aged and infirm. Its story began with Venerable Mary Angeline Teresa McCrory. She recognized the need for appropriate care for America’s aging population.

In 1929, she and six other Sisters began the Carmelite Sisters for the Aged and Infirm. They started in an empty rectory in Upper Manhattan. Saint Patricks Convent joined their mission in 1953.

Richard Cardinal Cushing purchased the former Lafayette Hotel in Boston. He wanted to create a 125-bed home for the aged. He welcomed Venerable Mary Angeline Teresa McCrory and the Carmelite Sisters. They would administer the facility.

However, the Lafayette Hotel proved too small. Repairs became too costly. Cardinal Cushing intervened again. He donated land in Framingham.

The Sisters built the current Saint Patricks Convent. It began with 333 residents. Now, it serves 292. The convent was dedicated on May 17, 1970.

Venerable Mary Angeline Teresa McCrory’s philosophy guides Saint Patricks Convent. She emphasized the dignity and worth of every older person. She believed in providing more than just an up-to-date facility. She urged bringing Christ to every older person. This meant giving compassion, interest, loving care, and warmth. It also meant inspiring lay people to give the same loving care.

Today, Saint Patricks Convent continues this mission. It provides a gentle atmosphere. The convent cares for the holistic needs of its residents. Great attention is given to preserving each person’s dignity and independence. The Sisters and staff carry out Venerable Mary Angeline Teresa McCrory’s vision. They live the slogan “The difference is love.”

Saint Patricks Convent stands as a testament. It shows the enduring legacy of care and compassion. It began with a simple act of kindness. Cardinal Cushing’s donation of the Lafayette Hotel. It grew into a beacon of hope for the aged and infirm. It is rooted in the Carmelite Sisters’ unwavering commitment.

As we stand here, consider the countless lives touched by this institution. Reflect on the love and care provided within these walls. Saint Patricks Convent is more than just a building. It is a symbol of faith, service, and the enduring power of human compassion. It’s a place where every resident is treated with dignity and respect. The legacy of Venerable Mary Angeline Teresa McCrory lives on. Her vision continues to inspire all who enter here.
