Louis Simeone Park wasn’t always the name. Once upon a time, it was known as TWU Park. This was because the Transport Workers Union maintained it.
Let’s jump back to the man behind the name. Louis F. Simeone was a dedicated community activist. He served on Community Board 4 and Community School Board 24. He even chaired both! Simeone was also a Lions Club member. He championed increased senior housing in Corona. Simeone passed away in 1984. The park was renamed in his honor in 1998.
Fast forward to more recent times. Louis Simeone Park got a $3.2 million upgrade completed in January. The park now boasts a playground for kids of all ages. There is also a spray shower to cool off on hot days. Adults can enjoy the fitness equipment. A walking path surrounds the park. New benches and plantings add to the charm.
Notice anything different about the fences? The north, south, and west fences were removed. This was to create a more welcoming space. A new entrance was added from Strong Avenue. It had been closed. The playground and planted areas have shorter fences.
