Did you notice the asymmetry of this facade? It is a signature of Art Nouveau in Brussels. Welcome to the Jardin d’enfants n°15. This is a unique creation by Victor Horta. He is renowned for his Art Nouveau designs.

The Jardin d’enfants n°15 stands as the only school designed by Horta. At the time Henri Jacobs was the specialist for schools. The Jardin d’enfants n°15 is located in the Marolles district. It is a beautiful example of early childhood education architecture.

Let’s look closer at the history. Charles Buls the mayor commissioned this building in 1895. Horta completed the plans by 1897. The Jardin d’enfants n°15 was finished in 1900.

Notice the white stone facade. See the blue stone at the base. Horizontal stone bands accent the facade. The facade shows asymmetry typical of Art Nouveau. The central section is taller than the classroom wings.

The central section features varying widths. The staircase is on the right. It stands out from the other sections. Finely crafted pilasters border this section. Look for sculpted floral motifs. They are typical of Horta’s style. The low door has a slightly broken arch. Above the door are windows. Orange mosaic panels separate them. Sculpted frames surround these windows. The top window features an arch. Stone pinnacles top this section.

The other sections include the school entrance. Admire the wrought iron canopy. It is probably the finest in Brussels. An arched transom sits above the door. This arch type was often used by Horta. Windows with arches flank the door.

Now turn your attention to the side wings. Classrooms are in these wings. Each has three windows. The wings appear similar but have differences. The right wing has a mosaic panel. It reads “Jardin d’enfants – Kindertuin”. The left wing lacks this. The right wing’s arches are slightly broken. The left wing’s arches have sculpted plant motifs.

Inside the Jardin d’enfants n°15 the layout is simple. It is also functional. The vestibule opens to a square hall. Four classrooms are at the corners. A light metal frame covers the hall. A glass skylight tops it off.

Originally, the Jardin d’enfants n°15 could accommodate 200 children. Today the Jardin d’enfants n°15 is a protected monument. It has artistic aesthetic historical and urbanistic significance. The Jardin d’enfants n°15 represents Horta’s architectural skills. It also has a picturesque silhouette. The contrasting materials add interest. White stone and blue stone create a beautiful contrast.

Consider the detailed elements. Look at the floral motifs and ironwork. Appreciate the craftsmanship. The Jardin d’enfants n°15 is more than a school. It is a testament to Art Nouveau. It is a legacy of Victor Horta’s vision.
