Could a mountain hold secrets whispered through centuries? Here at Seongjuam Hermitage, nestled on the eastern slopes of Mount Byeokdosan in Gyeongju, such secrets reside. Seongjuam Hermitage may be small, but its treasures are immense, woven into the very fabric of the mountain.

Seongjuam Hermitage holds a significant piece of Korean history, the Rock-Carved Standing Buddha Triad in Yul-dong. This triad isn’t just a beautiful carving. It’s a designated Korean Treasure (#122), a testament to the artistry of the Unified Silla period (668-935 AD).

The journey to Seongjuam Hermitage begins with a winding drive through the serene countryside, culminating in a mountainside trail. Before reaching the hermitage itself, a signpost beckons. It tells the tale of the remarkable Buddha triad. This triad depicts Amita-bul, the Buddha of the Western Paradise, flanked by Gwanseeum-bosal, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, and Daesaeji-bosal, the Bodhisattva of Wisdom and Power. The central figure, Amita-bul, captivates with a gentle smile and a unique headpiece resembling a hat. His hands form a mudra, a ritualized hand gesture, with thumb and index finger touching. Gwanseeum-bosal, with a feminine form and feet gracefully apart, displays her own mudra. Her right hand, raised above her shoulders, joins thumb and middle finger, while her left hand cradles a treasure bottle. Daesaeji-bosal mirrors Gwanseeum-bosal’s appearance. Each figure is further adorned with a radiant halo.

The hermitage grounds offer a unique layout. The first structure you encounter isn’t the main hall, but a Sanshin-gak, a shaman shrine dedicated to the Mountain Spirit. Inside, a vibrant mural depicts Sanshin, seemingly forming a mudra. Beside him, a tiger’s psychedelic eyes add a touch of the mystical.

Ascending uneven stone steps, you’ll reach the L-shaped main hall. One side houses the monks’ living quarters. The other serves as the main hall itself, adorned with striking red murals. One mural depicts the Yeongsan Hoesang-do, the Sermon on Vulture Peak. The other portrays the Shinjung Taenghwa, a scene of guardian figures. But the true gem lies behind this main hall. There, carved into the rock face, is the magnificent Buddha triad.

Seongjuam Hermitage is more than just a place of worship. It’s a living museum, a place where history and spirituality intertwine. The artistry within the small main hall and the Sanshin-gak is captivating. Yet, it’s the Rock-Carved Standing Buddha Triad that truly sets Seongjuam Hermitage apart. It’s a timeless echo of Silla artistry, a secret whispered by the mountain for all who seek its hidden treasures.
