The name “Hongdae” itself is a shortened form of Hongik University, the area’s artistic heart. As Hongik University’s art department flourished, particularly after the May 6 military coup, so too did the surrounding area. This influx of artists and students gave rise to a vibrant ecosystem of art academies, studios, and supply shops, like the iconic Homi Art Shop. This shop, established in 1975, has been a cornerstone of Hongdae’s art scene. Hong Gallery captures this artistic spirit. It provides a platform for both established and emerging artists. This aligns with the spirit of 108 Workshop. This early artist studio fostered collaboration and innovation. The gallery’s focus echoes the original intention of Homi Art Shop. Its owner aimed to inspire creativity by providing a diverse range of art materials. This dedication to artistic expression is palpable within Hong Gallery’s walls.
