How did St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Lutwyche get its start? The story begins with a generous judge and a growing community. Let’s step back in time to uncover the unique history of this local landmark.

St. Andrew’s Anglican Church was not always as you see it today. The first church on this site was built in 1866. It was a simple timber structure, reflecting the style of a quiet English village church. Judge Alfred James Peter Lutwyche, the first Supreme Court Judge of Moreton Bay, donated the land for the church. He and his wife were dedicated Anglicans.

The original St. Andrew’s Church could comfortably accommodate 133 people. It cost over £200 which was raised by public subscription. Services were previously held in the home of Judge Lutwyche’s sister-in-law. The judge himself often conducted services when clergy were scarce. His wife was actively involved in religious and charitable fundraising. Judge Lutwyche died in 1880 and was buried in the church grounds.

As the parish grew, the need for a larger church became apparent. By 1923, plans were underway for a new building. Melbourne architect Louis Williams was chosen to design the new St. Andrew’s Church. His brief was to incorporate parts of the old church and keep the cost under £6000.

Construction began in October 1925. The foundation stone was laid on St. Andrew’s Day. The current St. Andrew’s Anglican Church opened on 8 August 1926. One notable feature of the new church was its tower. It was the first Church of England church in Brisbane to have a tower or spire. The tower became a memorial to Archdeacon Osborn.

In 1927, a set of bells was installed in the tower. These bells were donated by the Jones brothers in memory of their father. St. Andrew’s became known for its beautiful bell ringing. The church houses thirteen bells.

Over time, St. Andrew’s parish continued to expand. By 1947, it was the largest parish in the diocese. In 1960, extensions were made to the church. The old 1866 church parts were demolished to make way for these additions. The extensions were designed to match the original 1926 church. Stained-glass windows from the old church were incorporated into the new design.

Today, St. Andrew’s Anglican Church stands as a testament to faith and community. The red brick, Gothic-style building with its terracotta tile roof is a local landmark. The timber lych gate, completed in 1924, adds to the church’s unique character. The church is listed as a local heritage place.

Reflecting on the history of St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, we see a story of dedication and growth. From its humble beginnings in 1866 to its current form, the church has been a vital part of the Lutwyche community. The building serves as a reminder of the people who shaped its past and the faith that sustains its present.
