The Jesuits first laid the foundations, envisioning a college. Construction, helmed by Francesco Maria Richini, commenced around 1615. But even back then, delays were a thing – a plague outbreak in 1630 brought things to a screeching halt. Work eventually resumed in 1651. Inside these walls, future minds were nurtured and shaped. However, the Jesuits’ tenure wasn’t to last. In 1773, Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, with her keen eye for culture, saw the potential of Palazzo di Brera. She transformed it into a hub of learning and creativity. The Biblioteca Nazionale Braidense, a treasure trove of books and manuscripts, found a home here. So did the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, an incubator for artistic talent that thrives to this day. And let’s not forget the Osservatorio Astronomico di Brera, where the cosmos is studied. Giuseppe Piermarini, a leading Neoclassical architect, put his stamp on Palazzo di Brera. He renovated the library, designed the grand entrance on Via Brera, and completed the courtyard where Napoleon now stands. Over time, the courtyards and hallways became an open-air museum. They are adorned with monuments celebrating artists, scientists, and benefactors associated with Brera. Look around. Can you spot the monuments to Cesare Beccaria and Giuseppe Parini? They grace the monumental staircase that leads to the Pinacoteca, one of Italy’s largest art galleries. Palazzo di Brera is more than just a building.
