“Birth and death years unknown.” You might see those words repeated in some of the records here at the Cemit\u00e9rio de Santa Cruz do Douro. The cemetery lies tucked away in a quiet corner of the village of Santa Cruz do Douro, a small mountain village just north of Porto. Though the cemetery is small, it’s surprisingly significant, for its history and the people laid to rest here are rich and inspiring. This small cemetery holds the final resting place of E\u00e7a de Queir\u00f3s, a celebrated Portuguese writer whose most famous work, The City and the Mountains, featured the village in its pages. Not only does it feature Santa Cruz do Douro, but it also features the Quinta de Villa Nova, a grand estate, also known as the “Casa de Tormes” by the author, that is located in the heart of the village. The author, E\u00e7a de Queir\u00f3s, was known for his captivating descriptions of the landscape and the people of the region. In fact, the cemetery itself is mentioned in the book, lending an air of reality to the fictional accounts. The author was buried in the cemetery after his death in Paris in 1900. E\u00e7a de Queir\u00f3s is no longer just a name on a page. Today, the cemetery is a place of pilgrimage for fans and admirers who seek to uncover the footsteps of the writer, an enduring legacy, in the quiet, rural backdrop of a small village in Portugal.
