Nestled on the northern slopes of the Acropolis, the Church of the Metamorphosis Sotiros stands as a testament to Byzantine resilience. This charming little church, also known as the Church of the Transfiguration of Christ, is tucked away near the intersection of Theorias and Klepsydras streets. It overlooks the quaint Anafiotika neighborhood in Plaka. The Church of the Metamorphosis Sotiros dates back to the middle Byzantine period, specifically the third quarter of the 11th century. Imagine standing here centuries ago, surrounded by the bustling energy of ancient Athens. While much has changed around it, the Church of the Metamorphosis Sotiros has endured. From its original structure, the north side and the dome remain, whispering tales of the past. The church has seen expansions and alterations, most notably during the Ottoman occupation from 1456 to 1833. Look closely at the northern side. You’ll see a pointed arch, a distinctive feature of Ottoman architecture. The Church of the Metamorphosis Sotiros belongs to the architectural style of a simple cross-in-square church without a narthex. Its eastern side features three semicircular arches. On the southern side, a rectangular chapel has been added, carved directly into the rock. The church’s walls, constructed using the cloisonné masonry system, are adorned with ceramic elements. Notice the cufic designs, rhomb shapes, and zigzags. These patterns echo the artistic influences that have swept through Athens over the centuries. The Church of the Metamorphosis Sotiros is crowned by a classic “Athenian” dome. It is octagonal, elegant, and tall, with marble columns gracing its corners and lobed windows that allow light to filter into the sacred space. The dome seems to reach for the heavens, a symbol of spiritual aspiration. The Church of the Metamorphosis Sotiros celebrates its feast day on August 6th each year. Even today, this ancient church remains a vital part of the religious fabric of Athens, a place where the echoes of Byzantine chants still resonate.
