Can a school breathe resistance? Here at the Geschwister-Scholl-Schule, it certainly feels like it. The Geschwister-Scholl-Schule isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to courage. It’s named after Sophie and Hans Scholl. They were siblings who dared to defy the Nazi regime. Their story echoes within these walls. The Geschwister-Scholl-Schule opened its doors in 1929. It was originally the Römerstadtschule, built to serve the children of the new Maysiedlung Römerstadt. Designed by architect Martin Elsaesser, the building itself has witnessed history unfold. After World War II, the US Army occupied parts of Römerstadt. The school building temporarily housed workers. It later became a primary school and a higher trade and business school. The Geschwister-Scholl-Schule became a Realschule in 1955. Initially called Römerstadt-Mittelschule, it was renamed Heddernheimer Mittelschule. It finally received its current name in 1964. The school now honors the courageous Scholl siblings. Over time, the Geschwister-Scholl-Schule expanded. Wooden pavilions were added in the 1960s to accommodate the growing student body. Later, newer pavilions replaced them. In 1994, a new main building designed by Behnisch Architekten joined the original structure. The school now boasts specialized rooms for science, computers, crafts, and even a teaching kitchen and photo lab. The Geschwister-Scholl-Schule has continued to evolve. In 2013, it became the only Realschule in Frankfurt to offer a Preliminary English Test preparation course. The school also partners with the Stadtschulamt Frankfurt and KUBI e.V. for the “Jugendhilfe in der Schule” project. This provides support to students and their families. In 2017, the Geschwister-Scholl-Schule was recognized as an “Umweltschule” for its commitment to environmental education. Today, the Geschwister-Scholl-Schule serves students primarily from Nordweststadt, Praunheim, Ginnheim, Riedberg, and Heddernheim. As you stand here, consider the legacy of resistance.
