Two cannons stand guard at Lahori Gate. They’re not just old guns. They whisper tales of empires risen and fallen. These cannons were discovered during the Red Fort’s restoration. Buried deep they served as pillars. Imagine the soldiers who once stood beside them.

These aren’t Mughal cannons. The date 1827 is etched into their barrels. A crown and the letter ‘P’ mark them as English. They underwent ‘proofing’ a quality test for accuracy. Each cannon weighed over 2000 kilograms. Their trunnion marks are unclear. We can’t know the foundry or gunsmith.

The cannons arrived at the Red Fort after the 1857 siege. This is ironic. The Mughals never used artillery to defend the fort. It didn’t need it. No one challenged their power in the 17th century. Later though invaders came. Nadir Shah entered unopposed. The Marathas’ artillery pounded the walls. Even the emperor relied on allies’ cannons for defense.

These cannons symbolize a shift in power. They are a reminder of British rule. A silent testament to a time when the Mughal empire faded. They represent India’s complex history. From Mughal might to British occupation. These cannons stand as a stark contrast. A glimpse into how the mighty fort once stood undefended. Now these cannons guard its entrance. Their presence a reminder of power struggles and the changing tides of history. Take a moment to picture the stories they could tell. The battles witnessed the lives touched.
