Seven hundred and twenty-five pounds. That’s how much was pledged in 1859 by twenty founding members of Christ Church Rathgar. A remarkable sum for the time. It marked the beginning of this vibrant Presbyterian church. Right here on Rathgar Road.

Christ Church Rathgar wasn’t built overnight. It started as a simple service held in an old schoolhouse. In 1859 a group of Presbyterians in the Rathmines Rathgar area saw a need. They petitioned the Presbytery of Dublin. They desired a regular Sunday evening service. Their request was granted. The congregation was born. The need for a permanent home became clear. This led to the purchase of the current site.

Rev William Fleming Stevenson began his ministry here in January 1860. This marked a significant milestone. He guided the congregation through its early years. His leadership laid the foundation for Christ Church Rathgar’s enduring presence. For over a century and a half this church has served its community. Its members have faithfully shared the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Beyond its local impact Christ Church Rathgar supports a far-reaching mission. The congregation participates in a project in Gujarat India. This project supports Bethel Hostels. These hostels provide housing and education for disadvantaged children. Many come from broken families or families of migrant workers. The church’s involvement highlights a broader commitment to global outreach.

Today Christ Church Rathgar continues its mission. It offers Sunday services. It welcomes visitors. It remains an active part of the Rathgar community. The church building may undergo renovations. Services may be temporarily relocated to the Orwell Hall. This is just another chapter in this remarkable church’s long history. Its story is woven with faith dedication and a commitment to serving others both near and far. This is a testament to the vision of those twenty founding members who pledged £725. A testament to the enduring legacy of Christ Church Rathgar.
