Here, at Sinbanpo Middle School, history whispers through the hallways. Education in Korea wasn’t always available to everyone. Less than 20 percent of Koreans had formal education before 1945.

Sinbanpo Middle School stands as a testament to South Korea’s remarkable educational journey. The modern education system is based on a 1968 charter. It identifies education as a crucial aspect of citizenship. The government’s role is defined as providing access to education for all Korean children.

Korean society has historically valued learning. Educated individuals were highly respected. During the Chosun Dynasty, passing the civil service exam was key. It led to social and material success for families. Families splurged on tutors for their children.

Confucianism shaped ideas about education in Korea. Education meant socialization into Confucian virtues. These virtues started in early childhood. The model figure was the virtuous scholar-official. He was skilled in poetry and statecraft. Education started early because students had to master classical Chinese.

Formal education in Korea began in the Three Kingdoms era. Koguryo, the kingdom closest to China, studied Confucian classics. The first public educational institution was T’aehak. King Sosurim of Koguryo founded it in 372. Modeled on Chinese institutions, T’aehak taught Chinese and Confucian classics.

During the Chosun Dynasty, the royal court established schools. They taught Confucian subjects in the provinces and in Seoul. The Snggyungwan, the Confucian national university, provided higher education.

The emphasis on education is a major reason for Korea’s rapid development. It’s rooted in the traditional respect for the educated class. Under the monarchy, educated men were appointed to office. Education was reserved for the elite.

Sinbanpo Middle School exists within a system with high standards. South Korea’s education system is demanding. Many students meet with private tutors or attend cram schools. South Korea has high literacy levels.

The Ministry of Education sets educational policy. It determines curriculum and approves textbooks. Uniform standards are enforced for all school levels. South Korea has compulsory education through the ninth grade. A large percentage of students attend high school.

The Korean public education structure is divided into three parts. Six years of primary school are followed by three years of middle school. Then comes three years of high school.

After middle school, students attend general academic or vocational high school. Public and private schools have little difference in curriculum.

The curriculum is prescribed by law. The well-educated person is healthy, independent, creative, and moral. The primary curriculum includes moral education. It also includes the Korean language, social studies, and mathematics. English-language instruction begins in the third grade.

English is a skill held in high esteem in Korea. Students study English from primary school through high school.

Sinbanpo Middle School is a part of this rich educational history. It reflects Korea’s commitment to learning.
