Imagine whispers of medieval lords echoing around us. Here in Moisburg, we stand on ground steeped in history. This municipality in the Harburg district boasts a past stretching back centuries.
Moisburg was first mentioned in documents in 1242. The name Moisburg hints at a castle, a Burg, though its exact location remains a mystery. Written records confirm a castle existed between 1310 and 1322. The Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg built it. They wanted to protect themselves from the Archbishopric of Bremen.
Originally, the Moisburg area belonged to the County of Stade. Then Duke Otto was granted the territory in 1236. Moisburg remained an administrative center until 1859. It was part of the Amt Moisburg. Later, it fell under the jurisdiction of Tostedt, then Harburg. Since 1932, it has belonged to the district of Harburg.
Today, Moisburg is more than just a historical footnote. It is a vibrant community. As of December 2023, 2,093 people call Moisburg home. The municipality covers 11.28 square kilometers. It includes Moisburg, Appelbeck, Podendorf and Ruhmannshof.
The Moisburg coat of arms is quite striking. It is divided into silver and blue fields. A red castle tower stands on the right. On the left, there is a silver bar with three red vertical stripes.
Moisburg offers several cultural attractions. It lies on the Lower Saxon Mill Road. The Moisburg Mill Museum is housed in the old official mill. It is an outpost of the Kiekeberg open-air museum.
The Amtshaus stands where the former Moisburg castle once stood. The Amtskirche dates back to around 1200. Inside, you can find an altar cross from the 14th century. The pulpit, altar and baptismal font date from 1639.
Appelbeck also features a watermill. The Moisburg Mill Museum is really worth a visit.
Moisburg has regular events. Every year on May 1st, locals raise a maypole. A pottery market takes place on the second weekend in May. The Moisburg marksmen celebrate their Schützenfest on the third weekend in June. The church community hosts a festival every two years.
Moisburg has numerous clubs and associations. These include the volunteer fire brigade’s support association. Also there is the Kultur Punkt Moisburg and the Moisburg Brass Quartet. The MTV Moisburg is a sports club. The music school Hollenstedt & Umgebung is present. The Oldtimer Trekkerfreunde Moisburg celebrate vintage tractors. The Schützenverein Moisburg und Umgebung has existed since 1861. The Spielmannszug Moisburg provides musical entertainment.
Moisburg enjoys good transport links. The A1 motorway is about 5 km away. Regular buses connect Moisburg to the train stations in Buxtehude and Neu Wulmstorf.
Several notable people were born or lived in Moisburg. Wilhelm Poeck was a Low German writer. He was born in Moisburg in 1866. Maximilian Beck, an actor, was born here in 1995. Gerhard Quade, a painter and graphic artist, lived in Moisburg. Ulrike Albers and Johannes Saurer, the comic artists Saurer & Albers, also reside here. Willi Meyne, an art historian and local researcher, was an honorary citizen of Moisburg.
