From atop Ballast Point, the sun paints the San Diego Bay in hues of gold and rose. The air, thick with salt and the cries of gulls, carries whispers of a time when Ballast Point Lighthouse stood proudly here. Ballast Point was more than just a name. It was a testament to the ingenuity of early Yankee skippers, who gathered stones from this very spot to stabilize their ships on their long voyages around Cape Horn. The stones of Ballast Point, carried across vast oceans, connected this small peninsula to the bustling ports of the East Coast. Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo, a Portuguese explorer sailing under the Spanish flag, first charted these waters in 1542. He anchored in the calm embrace of Ballast Point, naming the harbor San Miguel. Decades later, Sebastián Vizcaíno, another Spanish explorer, rechristened the harbor San Diego. From these early encounters, Ballast Point became a crucial landmark. In 1890, Ballast Point Lighthouse was constructed, a beacon of hope for mariners navigating the treacherous waters. The lighthouse, with its square, white tower, housed a fifth-order Fresnel lens, its fixed white beam piercing the darkness. This was a unique distinction. Ballast Point Lighthouse was the last lighthouse on the Pacific Coast to display a fixed light. Before the lighthouse, Ballast Point was a bustling whaling station. New England whalers hunted gray whales off Point Loma, then towed their massive carcasses to Ballast Point. Here, the blubber was rendered in huge try-pots, the air thick with the smell of boiling oil. The original lighthouse complex included two dwellings, a boathouse, and the iconic tower. Sadly, the original structure met its demise in 1960, deemed unstable due to a failing foundation. However, the story of Ballast Point Lighthouse doesn’t end here. The lantern room, a silent witness to the changing tides, was saved. It now resides in Old Town San Diego, a poignant reminder of the point’s rich maritime history. An automated light, perched on a piling offshore, continues the legacy of Ballast Point, guiding ships safely into the harbor. Though the original structure is gone, the spirit of Ballast Point Lighthouse endures, a testament to San Diego’s vibrant past.
