Initially part of the Los Angeles City High School District it joined LAUSD in 1961. In the early 1970s Granada Hills boasted the largest student body of any high school in the United States. Granada Hills Charter High School’s transformation into a charter school is a remarkable story. In 2003 the Los Angeles Board of Education approved its charter status.
