What if I told you there’s a place in Yosemite where you can feel like you’re floating above the clouds? Cloud’s Rest. It’s not the tallest peak in Yosemite National Park, but its unique location gives it a prominence that rivals its loftier neighbors. Cloud’s Rest looms east-northeast of Yosemite Village, its sheer cliffs a dramatic backdrop to the valley below. The name, Cloud’s Rest, has a charming origin story. A member of the Mariposa Battalion, Dr. Lafayette H. Bunnell, recounted how his party named the peak. They were forced back to camp by an approaching snowstorm. As they retreated, they observed the clouds seeming to settle and rest upon the mountaintop, hence the name. Reaching Cloud’s Rest is a journey in itself. You can choose a 7.2-mile hike from Tioga Pass Road, a more ambitious 13-mile trek from Happy Isles via Little Yosemite Valley, or even tackle one of the technical climbing routes. The mountain itself is an arête, a narrow, knife-like ridge carved by ancient glaciers that sculpted Tenaya Canyon and Little Yosemite Valley. The northwest face, a massive granite wall, rises an impressive 5,000 feet above Tenaya Creek. From the summit, the views are simply breathtaking. A panoramic vista unfolds, showcasing iconic landmarks like Half Dome and El Capitan, as well as the vast expanse of the Sierra Nevada. The journey to Cloud’s Rest offers not just a physical challenge but also a connection to the park’s rich history and geological wonders. It’s a place where you can truly feel on top of the world, or at least resting among the clouds.
