A romantic tale of Gautier and Eleyne adds to the allure of Phalempin. However the abbey of Saint-Christophe in Phalempin proves its existence. Saswalon the first known chatelain of Lille founded this abbey. The year was 1039. He dedicated it to Saint-Christophe. The abbey’s necropolis was located near the chateau du Plouich. This chateau belonged to the chatelains of Lille. Several chatelains lived and died there. They were powerful figures in the area.

Phalempin was the primary fief of the chatelain of Lille. The chatelain was one of the four high-justices of the châtellenie. The chateau du Plouich was attacked in 1646. The attacks were carried out by the Lorrains who wanted to plunder it. Tradition holds that Saint Martin converted the village to Christianity. The land of the Bos belonged to the chatelain of Lille. It was located in Phalempin. It gave its name to the du Bois family. They were a branch of the Fiennes family. Several chatelains were buried in the abbey church.

François Piétin was a canon of the abbey of Phalempin. He died in 1576. He left behind a chronicle. This valuable document describes the abbey and the châtellenie of Lille. Historians have consulted it often. The fief passed through inheritance. It went to the Luxembourg-Saint-Pol family then to the Bourbons. It became part of Henri IV’s inheritance. This was during a time when the Netherlands were under Spanish rule. The abbey continued until the French Revolution. The last monks were expelled. Buildings were dismantled and sold as national property.

Today the tile factory still operates. There are also several farms that still maintain the agricultural character of the area. However urbanization is increasing. A business zone now includes the European endive market. It has grown near one of the entrances to Phalempin. The proximity to the Lille agglomeration is a factor.
