“Can you feel that breeze?,” I ask. It’s the same breeze that once carried John J. Montgomery’s gliders. We’re standing at the Montgomery Waller Recreation Center. This isn’t just a park. It is a tribute to aviation history. It’s a place for community and recreation.
The Montgomery Waller Recreation Center has an interesting past. In 1883, John Montgomery achieved controlled flight. He launched his glider from Otay Mesa. This made him an aviation pioneer.
Later, in 1950, something special happened here. A silver wing was dedicated to this site. It was from a World War II B-32 Dominator bomber. This 90-foot wing became a local landmark.
Then, in 1964, the Waller family donated land. It was next to the monument. The park was named after their son, Luckie Waller. This combined aviation history with community space. That’s how the Montgomery Waller Recreation Center was born.
The Montgomery Memorial stands tall nearby. It is a monument to Montgomery’s achievements. The 93-foot stainless steel wing is visible for miles. People call it the Silver Wing.
Look down at the terrazzo walk around the monument’s base. You will see names of aviators who followed Montgomery. A nearby tablet has an inscription to his winged flight.
The Montgomery Memorial was officially dedicated on May 21, 1950. Montgomery’s brother and sister attended. The San Diego Junior Chamber of Commerce presented the memorial. James A. Robbins accepted it for San Diego County.
The Montgomery Memorial is a California Historical Landmark. It is also a Historic Landmark designated by San Diego.
Today, the Montgomery Waller Recreation Center offers many programs. There are classes for all ages. Kids can enjoy basketball leagues and arts and crafts. Adults can join guitar club, karaoke, and vocal training. The center even hosts special events. A Snow Day event is planned for December 7, 2024.
