“Der Meister ist da und rufet dich” The inscription above the main portal of the Johannes-Calvin Church in Mannheim echoes through time. This isn’t just any church. It’s the only Johannes-Calvin Church in all of Germany. A testament to faith resilience and a unique piece of history.

The Johannes-Calvin Church stands proudly in Friedrichsfeld a Mannheim district. Its story begins long before its 1902 dedication. Hugenot families fleeing Sedan settled in Friedrichsfeld in the 17th century. They built a church in 1687 a beacon of French-Reformed faith. Sadly war struck. The Palatinate War of Succession destroyed Friedrichsfeld including the church. The inhabitants fled. New settlers rebuilt. The Reformed community was served by Seckenheim’s pastor. Later they became a branch of Edingen’s parish.

A new church was built in 1741 on the old church’s site. It was enlarged in 1852. But by the late 19th century it was too small. A new building was needed. The cornerstone was laid in 1900. Grand Duke Friedrich I attended the dedication ceremony in 1902. The Edinger pastor remained responsible for the parish. A vicarage was added in 1904. Friedrichsfeld became an independent parish in 1910.

World War I took its toll. Three of the four bells were confiscated. Two new bells were added in 1924. World War II saw two more bells lost. The church survived relatively unscathed. New bells were inaugurated in 1950. Renovations occurred in 1961 and 1977. It was in 1977 during its 75th-anniversary celebration that the church received its namesake the reformer Johannes Calvin.

The Johannes-Calvin Church is a striking example of neo-Gothic architecture. Red brick and light sandstone form its exterior. The arched portals hint at Romanesque influences. The soaring steeple a hallmark of Behaghel’s church designs is attached to the south side. Inside a three-sided gallery encircles the nave. The organ loft above the altar bears an inscription from Hebrews 13:8. The original Voit organ was replaced in 1961 by a Walcker instrument.

The church’s entryway holds a bronze memorial plaque and Otto Hoffmann’s urn. Hoffmann a director of the stoneware factory donated 6000 gold marks to the church’s construction. Two sandstone plaques memorialize the community members lost in World War I and II. The red sandstone baptismal font dates back to 1959. The church’s four cast-steel bells ring out the faith and history of this remarkable place. The Johannes-Calvin Church stands as a symbol of enduring faith.
