Seven hundred years of history whisper from the very ground beneath our feet. Welcome to Corkagh Demesne. This tranquil park holds secrets. It’s a place where the echoes of gunpowder mills mingle with the gentle murmur of the Camac River.

Corkagh Demesne’s story begins long ago. In 1326 its lands were part of the Archbishop of Dublin’s manor of Clondalkin. The land was part of a vast estate controlled by the church for centuries. This makes Corkagh Demesne a truly ancient place. Imagine medieval castles and bustling farms.

For centuries the Demesne changed hands. French Huguenot families arrived settling here. They established gunpowder mills. These mills became vital to the local economy. However explosions were frequent and dangerous. One huge explosion in 1787 shook Dublin itself. The mills continued operating until the 1820s. The site also served as home to various notable families. The Finlay family owned Corkagh House for nearly 200 years. The Colley family followed. They added their own unique mark. The Colley family history included connections to famous figures. There was even a link to the Titanic.

The house itself was impressive. It had ten bedrooms and a large staff. Extensive gardens surrounded the grand house. There was even an unusual hexagonal building a playhouse and tea room. The Demesne also boasted a walled garden rose gardens and a dairy. The elegant Oak Avenue remains a testament to the Demesne’s past. Think of the carriages that once rolled down this avenue.

Corkagh House eventually fell into disrepair. It was demolished in 1960. But the land itself lived on. Dublin County Council acquired it. In 1986 the park opened to the public. Now Corkagh Demesne is a beautiful green space. It’s a haven for wildlife and recreation. The park’s modern features include a cycle track and sports pitches. A testament to its continued legacy.
