Moses Lapham was born in Rhode Island in 1808. He eventually found his way to Texas. He arrived in 1831. He embraced the Texan cause.

Lapham’s story is one of adventure. He taught school in San Felipe. He assisted Thomas H. Borden with surveying. His skills extended beyond the classroom and the field.

In 1836, Lapham enlisted in the Texas Army. He became a member of Captain Moseley Baker’s San Felipe Company. His service culminated in the Battle of San Jacinto. It was here that Lapham distinguished himself. He was one of the brave men who destroyed Vince’s Bridge. This daring action cut off the Mexican army’s retreat. It helped ensure the Texan victory.

After his military service, Lapham continued to contribute to Texas. He rejoined the Bordens to work as a surveyor. He helped lay out the new town of Houston in 1836.

Tragedy struck in 1838. Lapham was working as a deputy surveyor for Samuel Maverick. He was attacked by Comanche Indians near San Antonio. Moses Lapham and several others were killed.
