Did you know Joshoji Temple in Kyoto holds a yearly memorial service for a famous courtesan? This isn’t just any temple. Joshoji is a Nichiren sect Buddhist temple nestled in northwest Kyoto. It was founded in 1616 during the early Edo period. The temple was once home to hundreds of scholar monks. Many more buildings existed then.

The story of Joshoji is deeply intertwined with Yoshino Tayu II. She was a courtesan renowned for her beauty and grace. She either eloped with her lover or he paid for her release. Yoshino Tayu was a devout follower of Nichiren Buddhism. She helped finance the Yoshino-mon. This is the beautiful vermillion gate at the temple’s entrance. It’s named in her honor.

Yoshino Tayu sadly died at just 38. Her grave is at Joshoji along with that of her partner Haiya Joeki. Every year on the second Sunday of April Joshoji holds a special memorial for Yoshino Tayu. A procession of tayu in gorgeous kimono takes place. They perform an open-air tea ceremony. A flower arranging exhibition follows. It’s a spectacular sight.

Today Joshoji is quieter. You can watch a video about Yoshino Tayu’s life. For a small fee enjoy matcha green tea and traditional sweets. Joshoji also has a lovely garden. It’s particularly beautiful during autumn leaf viewing and cherry blossom season. The temple’s history is rich. It provides a glimpse into the lives of both religious figures and remarkable women. This serene place is a true hidden gem. It offers a fascinating piece of Kyoto’s past.
