Envision this grand, two-story villa before you. This is the Libysche Botschaft. It stands as a symbol of Libya’s diplomatic presence in Germany.

Since 2007, the Libysche Botschaft has resided at Podbielskiallee 42. The building itself has a rich history. It was constructed in 1913/14. Architect Fritz Redlin designed it as a two-family house. For many years, it housed the East Asian Seminar of the Free University. This neo-baroque Stadtpalais is now a protected historical landmark.

Germany and Libya began their mutual relations in 1955. This was when Libya gained independence. Since the Libyan revolution in 2011, Germany has assisted Libya. It aids in the country’s transition to democracy.

In 2011 and 2012, German Federal Foreign Minister Westerwelle visited Libya. Federal Economics Minister Rösler also visited. Political relations have been difficult to intensify. This is due to critical developments in Libya’s political and security situation since early 2014. The German Embassy in Tripoli has been temporarily relocated to Tunis since late July 2014.

Germany supports Libya in establishing a civil society. The Federal Foreign Office funds projects. These include a major women’s conference. Participants come from all sections of society. The goal is to promote a stronger role for women. It also helps establish the rule of law. It ensures respect for human rights.

Jamal Ali Omar El-Barag is the current ambassador. He assumed this role on February 19, 2020. Before becoming ambassador, he held several key positions. He was the General Director of Small and Medium Scale Industries. He also directed training at the Libya Iron and Steel Company. He also served as the General Director of Cooperation within Libya’s Foreign Ministry. From 2004 to 2008, he chaired the Libyan side of the Executive Committee of Tunisian Libyan Cooperation. From 2008 to 2012, he was ambassador to Germany for the first time.

The Libysche Botschaft is more than just a building. It is a vital link between Libya and Germany. It fosters cooperation and understanding. The Libysche Botschaft stands as a testament to enduring diplomatic ties.
