Beneath the Manx sky, the Cable Tram Flywheel stands as a silent testament to Douglas’s bygone era. The Cable Tram Flywheel isn’t just a wheel. It’s a portal to a time when cable trams danced through the streets of Douglas. This flywheel, unearthed during excavations in 2000, is the sole surviving piece of the machinery that propelled those trams. Imagine, in 1894, this very wheel whirring to life, part of the intricate mechanism that pulled trams along Victoria Street, up Prospect Hill, and around the * shaped route. This tramway, built by the Isle of Man Tramways and Electric Power Company, was a marvel of Victorian engineering. The Cable Tram Flywheel was a key player in this system, helping to maneuver the cars around the curves and inclines of Douglas. The tram system operated for 35 years, finally closing in 1929. Rediscovered during the IRIS sewer scheme, the flywheel lay buried, a forgotten relic of a transport revolution. Now, thanks to the efforts of Douglas Borough Council, Jurby Transport Museum volunteers, BB Consulting Engineers, and Gallas Foundry, the Cable Tram Flywheel has been restored to its former glory. It stands here in the Bottleneck car park, a proud reminder of Douglas’s rich transport heritage. The Cable Tram Flywheel is more than just a piece of metal; it is a tangible link to the past, a symbol of innovation and a tribute to the ingenuity of the Victorian era.
