Beijing Zhongguancun High School was founded on September 1 1982. It is a full-time public secondary school. The school is supported by the Beijing Municipal Government and the Ministry of Education. It is among the first demonstration high schools in Beijing.
The school has become a base for cultivating leading talents. It also serves as an early training base for young people in science and technology in Beijing.
The school operates across four locations. They are the main campus. There is also the Shuangyushu campus. The Qinghuayuan campus is another site. The Zhichun branch completes the set.
The establishment of Beijing Zhongguancun High School was driven by Wang Dezhao. He was a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. Over fifty academicians and experts supported the initiative. The aim was to address the schooling needs of the children. These children were of the Chinese Academy of Sciences employees.
In 1984 the school briefly offered vocational high school classes. These focused on electronic computers. Later the school refocused on general high school education.
The school’s name changed in 1992. It became the High School Affiliated to the University of Science and Technology of China. In 1998 Qinghuayuan Middle School merged into the school. This is now the Qinghuayuan campus. In 2001 the school reverted to its original name. In 2003 Shuangyushu Middle School joined. It became the Shuangyushu campus.
Beijing Zhongguancun High School was recognized as a Beijing Municipal Model High School in 2004. It became a National Featured High School Project Experimental School in 2011.
The school has a motto. It is “崇德, 尚礼, 笃学, 求真”. This translates to “Admiration of virtue courtesy diligent study and truth-seeking”. This motto reflects the values of the school.
The school has several unique features. In 1995 the school’s Party branch and the Zhou Enlai Research Department formed a friendship branch. A statue of Zhou Enlai was erected on campus in 1996. It bears the inscription “Reading for the rise of China”.
Beijing Zhongguancun High School maintains close ties with Nanjing Meiyuan Middle School. They jointly engage in activities.
In 2012 a new Zhou Enlai Memorial Hall was inaugurated. This was during the school’s 30th anniversary. The school promotes an academician culture. It also hosts lectures. These include the “Village Forum”. Experts from various fields are invited. They share their knowledge with students.
The school has facilities. They include the Zhou Enlai Memorial Hall. There are also subject-specific exhibition halls. These cover geography aviation history and wildlife. There is also an astronomical observatory and a basketball hall.
