Martin Luther Playground, originally known as Martin Luther King Jr. Park, began as a modest “vest pocket park” during Mayor Lindsay’s administration. Imagine a small, green space carved out of the concrete jungle, offering a brief respite from the city’s relentless energy. In 1993, GrowNYC and Henry Street Settlement joined forces to revitalize this triangular haven. They envisioned a space that would serve the community in multiple ways. The renovated Martin Luther Playground boasts two distinct areas. The first greets visitors with sunshine and open space. A small lawn, encircled by fragrant roses, invites relaxation and contemplation. A charming gazebo, twelve feet in diameter, stands as a centerpiece. Wheelchair-accessible planters line the path, a thoughtful touch that ensures everyone can enjoy the park’s beauty. The second area offers a contrasting ambiance of shade and tranquility. Here, a slate patio furnished with picnic tables beckons visitors to gather and socialize. Another lawn, surrounded by ornamental shrubs and flowers, creates a sense of enclosure and peace. Martin Luther Playground is more than just swings and slides. It’s a place where community thrives, a testament to the power of collaboration and the importance of green spaces in urban environments.
