“Can you see it?” I asked. Saint Andrew’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church stands as a testament to faith. It embodies the resilience of a community. Let’s delve into the story of this vibrant church.

Saint Andrew’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church started in 1949. This was shortly after World War II. Ukrainian immigrants fleeing Communist Ukraine arrived in the United States. These families sought a place to worship. They wanted to preserve their cultural identity.

Initially, services were held in rented spaces. These were in Washington, DC. But the community yearned for a permanent home. They purchased a building on 16th Street. It was converted into a church. This marked a significant step.

In 1986, the parish acquired eight acres in Silver Spring, Maryland. The land was for a new church. Architect M. Nimtsev designed it in the Kozak Baroque style. This architectural choice reflected their heritage.

That same year, tragedy struck. The Chornobyl nuclear disaster stunned the world. The parish dedicated the new church to the victims. Every Divine Liturgy commemorates those who perished. This act of remembrance is a constant reminder.

Construction finished in 1987. The church was consecrated on April 24, 1988. This date coincided with the millennium of Rus’-Ukraine becoming Christian. It was a momentous occasion.

Saint Andrew the First-Called is the church’s patron saint. A mosaic depicting his prophesy on the hills of Kyiv adorns the building. It symbolizes the deep spiritual roots of the community.

Saint Andrew’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church is a cathedral. His Eminence Metropolitan Antony is the Eparchial Bishop. He resides at the Metropolia Center in S. Bound Brook, NJ. Father Volodymyr Steliac has led the parish since 2001. His guidance has been invaluable.

The church faced adversity recently. The St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Parish in Los Angeles experienced vandalism. It was investigated as a hate crime and burglary. Archbishop Daniel assured Father Myroslav Mykytyuk of unwavering support. The entire Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA stood in solidarity.

Prayer became a cornerstone of resilience. The community sought solace, strength, and hope through faith. Prayers for healing and justice echoed. They dispelled the shadows of hate and fear.

In challenging times, unity prevailed. The broader community offered support. Religious leaders, parishioners, and neighbors rallied. They demonstrated the enduring power of the human spirit.

Saint Andrew’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church perseveres. It continues as a place of worship and culture. The community rebuilt with unwavering faith. They showed that love triumphs over hate.

Today, Saint Andrew’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church welcomes all. Sunday services blend Ukrainian and English. The services start at 10:00 a.m. Many ministries thrive within the parish.
