Marvel at Douai’s belfry a UNESCO World Heritage site. This magnificent structure began its life in 1380. It stands tall a testament to Douai’s rich history. The belfry’s 80-meter height is awe-inspiring. Inside a carillon of 62 bells rings out melodies. These bells span five octaves. Some date back to 1391. Sadly the original bells were removed during World War I. The occupying German forces intended to melt them down. Thankfully they were reinstalled after repairs in 1924. However 47 were replaced in 1954. This ensured a better sound for the carillon. Atop the belfry sits La Joyeuse a massive bell weighing 5.5 tonnes. This impressive bell dates from 1471. The belfry’s chimes ring every quarter hour. They are also played from a keyboard on Saturday mornings. This delightful sound echoes through Douai. The belfry is part of the City Hall complex. It reflects Douai’s history and significance.

Douai’s history stretches far back. Its location likely matches a 4th-century Roman fortress known as Duacum. During the Middle Ages Douai flourished. It became a textile market centre. In 1384 Flanders became part of the Burgundian and later Habsburg domains. Then in 1667 Louis XIV’s troops took Douai. The Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle ceded the town to France in 1668. Douai faced destruction during sieges from 1710 to 1712. The British army nearly razed the city. By 1713 Douai was fully French. It even became the seat of the Parliament of Flanders. World War I brought further destruction. Douai was occupied by the Germans. The La Brayelle airfield a significant site in French aviation history was a base for the Red Baron. In 1918 the town was partially burned. The British army liberated it after the Battle of Courtrai.

Douai’s climate is oceanic. Average annual temperature is 11 degrees Celsius. Rainfall averages 729.2 mm per year December is the wettest month. The hottest temperature recorded was 40.8 degrees Celsius. This extreme heat occurred on July 25 2019. The coldest temperature ever recorded was -20.5 degrees Celsius on January 8 1985. Douai’s economy is strong. Chemical and metal engineering are key sectors. Since 1970 Renault has had a large assembly plant nearby. This plant is named after Georges Besse the assassinated CEO. It’s now involved in electric car production. The Gare de Douai railway station offers regional and high-speed rail links. These services connect Douai to Lille Arras Lens Amiens Saint-Quentin and Valenciennes. High-speed TGV trains reach Paris Lyon Nantes and other cities.

The University of Douai once held great importance. Founded under Philip II’s patronage during Spanish rule. It was a significant centre for English Catholic education. This was especially important during the period of persecution in England. The university played a pivotal role in training Jesuits. They were essential for missionary work in England. The Douai-Rheims Bible a translation of the Old and New Testaments remains famous. Anglophone Roman Catholics used it for over 300 years. This Bible was initially published in two parts one at Douai in 1609 and another at Rheims 27 years earlier. Douai’s legacy is evident in its rich history. It’s also shown in its unique architecture and cultural contributions. The city’s spirit remains strong. It continues to thrive as a centre of history culture and industry.
