Journey back to 1522. Imagine the Chao Phraya River, not as we know it today, but as a powerful, undivided waterway. A canal dug during the Ayutthaya period forever altered its course. This seemingly simple act birthed the Khlong Bangkok Yai and reshaped the very geography of what we now know as the Bangkok Yai District. Khlong Bangkok Yai, also known as Khlong Bang Luang, became a defining feature of the district, its name echoing through time. Bangkok Yai District, nestled in the heart of Bangkok, is more than just a district; it’s a time capsule. It whispers tales of ancient rivers and royal capitals. Bangkok Yai wasn’t always known by this name. Originally, in 1915, it was Amphoe Hongsaram. Just a year later, it was renamed Amphoe Bangkok Yai. It even experienced a demotion to a king amphoe of Bang Yi Khan in 1938, before regaining its amphoe status in 1958. Finally, in 1972, it transformed into the khet we know today. Bangkok Yai holds a piece of Thailand’s royal history. Within its boundaries lies the area of Wat Arun Sub-district. This was the very site of Thon Buri, Thailand’s capital from 1767 to 1782. Imagine the bustling activity, the royal processions, the weight of a nation’s destiny unfolding right here in Bangkok Yai. Today, Bangkok Yai is divided into two distinct sub-districts: Wat Arun and Wat Tha Phra. Wat Arun, covering a smaller area of 0.834 square kilometers, stands in contrast to Wat Tha Phra, which sprawls across 5.346 square kilometers. Each sub-district contributes to the unique tapestry of Bangkok Yai. As you explore Bangkok Yai District today, take a moment to appreciate the layers of history beneath your feet. From the ancient flow of the Chao Phraya to the brief reign of Thon Buri, Bangkok Yai has witnessed the ebb and flow of time, leaving behind a rich legacy for us to discover.
