Consider the phrase “Actions Not Words”. It is the motto of Mayfield Senior School. This independent Catholic college preparatory school stands as a beacon for young women. It is a place where education meets empowerment. Founded in 1931 by the Society of the Holy Child Jesus, Mayfield Senior School has a rich history rooted in Pasadena.
Mayfield’s story began with Bishop John Joseph Cantwell. He invited the Society of the Holy Child Jesus to establish a Catholic school in Los Angeles. The school opened its doors on Euclid Avenue. Twelve students from pre-K to 12th grade were enrolled.
As Mayfield flourished, space became a pressing concern. In 1950, a pivotal decision was made. The school split into a junior and senior school. The Junior School remained on Euclid Avenue. The Senior School found a new home on Bellefontaine Street. This is where we stand today. Dr. Charles and Vera Strub gifted the Marshallia mansion. It became Mayfield’s Bellefontaine campus home. It was built in 1919.
Strub Hall is more than just a building. It is a piece of history. Originally known as the Marshall-Eagle House, this Italianate Beaux Arts estate was designed by Frederick L. Roehrig. Today, Strub Hall houses a chapel, conference room, and student activity areas. Mayfield Senior School boasts a 100% college acceptance rate. The school is known for its diverse student body. Mayfield offers nine Conservatory of the Arts programs.
Mayfield has 23 competitive teams in 12 sports. Academics are a cornerstone of the Mayfield experience. The school offers 28 AP classes. Students delve into eight subject areas. These areas include English, Fine Arts, and World Languages. Mayfield is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
Mayfield also has two full-time college counselors. They guide each student through the college application process. Counselors stay informed by touring colleges. This ensures that students find the best “fit”. Mayfield’s campus has served as a backdrop for numerous films and TV shows. Productions like Marvel’s Runaways and The Lost World: Jurassic Park have graced its grounds. Strub Hall served as the office of Dean Richmond in The Nutty Professor.
The school has a small campus of only 7.5 acres. Mayfield Senior School is a testament to the enduring legacy. It prepares young women to make a difference in the world. Mayfield Senior School remains committed to its mission. It fosters intellectual growth. It also promotes spiritual and ethical development.
