The Ridgewood Baptist Church’s roots stretch back to 1852. A German immigrant named Jeremias Grimmell started a Sunday school. He wanted to serve the children roaming the streets of Williamsburg Brooklyn. This small act of kindness blossomed into something remarkable.
In 1854, the First German Baptist Church of Brooklyn was officially formed. It joined the fellowship of Baptist Churches in Brooklyn New York in January 1855. The early congregation first gathered on Majeur Street now Remsen Street at Graham Avenue. Later in 1865 the society moved to Montrose Avenue near Union Avenue.
As the congregation grew they needed a new space. In 1925, a significant transformation occurred. The First German Baptist Church of Gowanus merged into the congregation. A new church building was constructed at 64-13 Catalpa Avenue in Ridgewood. With this move and merger, the church adopted its current name: Ridgewood Baptist Church.
