Breathing in the scent of incense sticks can transport you back centuries. Here at Ichijo-ji Temple that history is palpable. It stands as a testament to faith and resilience.

Ichijo-ji Temple’s story began in 650. An Indian monk named Hodo founded it. Emperor Kotoku requested its construction. Hodo’s prayers seemed to cure the emperor’s illness. As a reward, the temple was built. Legends say Hodo arrived in Japan riding a purple cloud or perhaps an iron dish.

The temple has faced destruction and reconstruction. Fire consumed it in 1523, sparing only the pagoda. Again, in 1628, fire ravaged the complex. Honda Tadamasa rebuilt the main hall that same year. He was the lord of Himeji Castle.

The three-storied pagoda is Ichijo-ji’s crown jewel. Built in 1171, it stands as one of Japan’s oldest. It exemplifies the wayō style. This architectural style developed during the Heian period. The pagoda features a hongawarabuki roof. These tiles interlock to withstand the elements. Inside, a central pole rises. It symbolizes Mount Sumeru. This is the center of the Buddhist universe. The pagoda achieved National Treasure status in 1952.

The main hall, or Kondo, also holds significance. Honda Tadamasa rebuilt it in 1628. Timber from Kyushu and Shikoku was used. The hall is a 9×8 ken building. It showcases early Edo period architecture. It is the largest main hall on the Kansai Kannon Pilgrimage. A typhoon damaged it in 1999. Restoration efforts preserved original materials. The hall reopened in 2007.

Bentendo and Myokendo are two Shinto shrines northwest of the Kondo. Bentendo dates from 1393-1466. It enshrines Benten, the goddess of wealth and music. Myokendo dates from 1467-1572. It enshrines Myoken, the deification of the North Star.

Ichijo-ji is temple number 26 on the Kansai Kannon Pilgrimage. Pilgrims travel to connect with Kannon. Kannon is the Bodhisattva of compassion.

As you explore, notice the small details. The gorinto, a five-tiered pagoda, dates back to 1321. Imagine the monks who walked these grounds centuries ago. They sought enlightenment and offered prayers.

Ichijo-ji Temple is more than just a historical site. It is a living testament to faith, art, and the enduring spirit of Japan.
