“Learning aerobics was awkward at first but it became fun” This is what Kang Ji-won a first-year student at Jeju Jungang Girls’ High School said. We are standing right in front of Jeju Jungang Girls’ High School one of the largest high schools on Jeju Island. This impressive institution is home to almost 1400 students spread across 37 classes. But Jeju Jungang is more than just a school. It’s a place where a unique initiative was launched a war on obesity.

In the mid-2010s the school noticed a rising obesity rate among its students. Long hours of studying combined with easy access to restaurants and dessert shops contributed to the problem. Principal Kim Jang-young took action. He previously worked at the Jeju Provincial Office of Education focusing on student health.

Principal Kim’s campaign started with increased physical activity. Mandatory aerobics classes were introduced for first-year students. Second and third-year students could participate optionally. Students also had to run laps around the schoolyard after lunch and dinner. Teachers joined in this initiative. They used the time for student consultations.

The school also tackled the students’ diet. Unhealthy food like deep-fried items and convenience foods were removed from the menu. Fruits and vegetables replaced them. Students were prohibited from leaving for fast food during meals. Bringing junk food to school was also banned. Healthier snacks like nuts sweet potatoes and fruits were allowed. Water consumption was encouraged. The school snack bar was closed when the contract expired.

These changes reduced the obesity rate among first and second-year students. It fell from 37.3 percent to 35.1 percent in just one year. Many students adapted to the new lifestyle. Some even enjoyed it. Jang Su-mi a senior student reported increased stamina and positive memories from the school’s aerobics competitions.

Principal Kim emphasizes the importance of health. He believes in a healthier school life for the students. He understands that students spend long hours at school and lack sunlight. Academic achievement is vital but a healthy school life is equally important he said. Jeju Jungang Girls’ High School shows that a proactive approach to student well-being can yield positive results. It’s a testament to the school’s commitment to its students’ holistic development.
