The Fontana delle Quattro Stagioni wasn’t always here. Its creation was a whirlwind. In 1927 Milan was expanding its Fiera Campionaria. A new access point needed a grand entrance. Architect Renzo Gerla envisioned a fountain. This wasn’t just any fountain. It was to be a showpiece. It would transform a muddy depression in Piazza Giulio Cesare into a breathtaking spectacle.
Gerla faced a monumental challenge. The deadline was April 12th. Just weeks away. The planned Ceppo stone was unavailable due to heavy snows. The Franco Pelitti e figlio company stepped in. They suggested Sarnico stone. A frantic race began. Drawings were made. Night and day the work continued under electric lamps. Often in thick fog.
The biggest hurdle? The statues representing the four seasons were missing. A last-minute trip to Vicenza. A frantic search. The statues were found just after midnight. Their transport seemed impossible but a stroke of luck intervened. A late night Vicenza council meeting. Firefighters came to the rescue. The statues arrived at the site at 7 am. By 8 am they were in place.
The Fontana delle Quattro Stagioni opened on time. It was a triumph. However its story doesn’t end there. A bomb exploded nearby on April 12th 1928. Sixteen people died many were injured. The summer statue was shattered. World War II brought more destruction. The original statues were lost.
Then in 1953 the fountain was restored. Sculptor Eros Pellini created new statues. They are beautiful. They capture the spirit of the original design.
