A coin from Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius rests in a museum. It was found in Ober-Neundorf. This unassuming village in Görlitz holds a history far richer than its quiet present suggests. Ober-Neundorf is more than just a suburb. It’s a place where layers of history intertwine. From Roman times to the present day its story is interwoven with the larger narrative of Görlitz and Saxony.

Ober-Neundorf’s documented history begins surprisingly late. While its name suggests an older origin the first certain mention is in 1406 as Newendorff. Before that a mention of Nuendorf around 1330 might refer to Ober-Neundorf. But it’s uncertain whether it is Ober-Neundorf or Klein Neundorf. It’s clear that the name distinction with Nieder-Neundorf near Rothenburg only emerged in the early 16th century.

For centuries Ober-Neundorf was defined by agriculture. Its residents were mainly small farmers working for the local manor. This manor Ober-Neundorf’s impressive Renaissance-style manor house stands testament to this. Built in the second half of the 16th century it showcases exquisite sgraffito remnants on its façade. The manor passed through several noble families including the von Gersdorff family. Karl Gottlob von Anton a significant figure in Görlitz’s history experimented with his agrarian reform ideas here.

The Congress of Vienna altered Ober-Neundorf’s trajectory. In 1815 Saxony ceded much of its territory to Prussia. Ober-Neundorf became part of the Silesian district of Görlitz in 1816. Beyond farming a windmill two smithies a wheelwright’s shop and a bakery thrived. After World War II the manor’s owner was expelled and the land redistributed. By 1960 three agricultural production cooperatives were established eventually merging with the Ludwigsdorf cooperative.

Ober-Neundorf transformed into a residential area in the late 20th century. Its residents mostly worked in nearby Zodel Ludwigsdorf and Görlitz. After reunification a new housing development emerged. Ober-Neundorf was part of the Niederschlesischer Oberlausitzkreis from 1994 to 1998. In 1999 it became part of the then independent city of Görlitz now the district capital of the Görlitz district since 2008. Ober-Neundorf’s population has fluctuated. It once numbered around 400 in the 19th century. The influx of refugees and displaced persons after World War II briefly increased its population. Despite later housing construction the population fell below 300 at the start of the 21st century.

The Ober-Neundorf manor remains a prominent landmark. It’s a remarkable example of Renaissance architecture in the region. Its rich history and ongoing restoration efforts remind us that even seemingly small villages possess captivating stories waiting to be unearthed. This hidden gem near Görlitz deserves a place in your travel memories.
