Arthur Fiedler was born in Boston on December 17 1894. He died in Brookline Massachusetts on July 10 1979. He led the Boston Pops for 50 seasons. Fiedler became the best-selling classical conductor ever. His recordings sold about 50 million discs.

Fiedler aimed to give audiences a good time. He led the Pops in popular tunes show music and classics. Before leading the Pops Fiedler studied at the Royal Academy of Music in Berlin. He studied violin piano and conducting. He then joined the Boston Symphony.

In 1924 Fiedler formed the Boston Sinfonietta. This chamber symphony started free outdoor concerts. These Esplanade concerts were the first time symphonic music played outdoors in Boston. In 1930 he became conductor of the Boston Pops.

Under Fiedler the Boston Pops made more recordings than any other orchestra. Most were for RCA Victor. They sold over 50 million dollars worth. In 1935 they recorded Jacob Gade’s “Jalousie”. It sold over a million copies. They also recorded George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue”.

Arthur Fiedler had a special relationship with Leroy Anderson. This resulted in unique compositions. These compositions became a permanent part of the Boston Pops repertoire. Anderson recounts how it began in 1936.

Arthur Fiedler’s impact extends beyond music. He was an honorary captain in the Boston Fire Department. He loved watching firefighters at work. He even helped in rescue efforts at the Cocoanut Grove fire in 1942.

In 1976 Arthur Fiedler received the University of Pennsylvania Glee Club Award of Merit. In 1977 President Gerald Ford presented him with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

The Arthur Fiedler Memorial cost $150000. Lippincott North Haven CT created it. In 1997 the Smithsonian Institution surveyed it. This was part of the “Save Outdoor Sculpture” program.
