Ascending the steps from Weseler Werft, we arrive at the Ruhrorter Werft. Here, at the Ruhrorter Werft, two relics of the past stand: a vibrant yellow banana wagon and a green coal wagon. These restored freight cars whisper tales of the area’s industrial heritage. The banana wagon, one of the last to depart the Großmarkthalle before its closure, and the coal wagon, once used at the former transshipment point on the Main riverbank. The Ruhrorter Werft also boasts two original cranes from the Osthafen’s founding around 1911. One crane is integrated into the architecture of the restaurant on the bastion. Its roof terrace, open to the public during restaurant hours, offers stunning views of the Main and the Frankfurt skyline. It’s an insider tip, especially at sunset. Two original cranes from 1912 grace the Ruhrorter Werft. They stand on mobile rail bridges, a testament to their working past, complete with original wooden planking. Beyond the industrial echoes, Ruhrorter Werft holds another story. East of the European Central Bank, a memorial commemorates the Jewish citizens deported during World War II from the Großmarkthalle. Guided tours are available upon request from the ECB.
