Gazing across Wöhrder See, can you imagine this tranquil expanse as a battlefield against nature’s fury? Wöhrder See, a shimmering jewel in Nuremberg’s crown, wasn’t always this serene. Before 1981, the Pegnitz River flowed untamed through this area, its two arms creating a floodplain prone to devastating floods. The Wöhrder See, named after the nearby district of Wöhrd, was born from a 1959 decision by the Nuremberg City Council. They sought to protect the historic Old Town from the Pegnitz’s unpredictable nature. The lake’s creation not only tamed the river but also healed the scars of World War II, transforming a landscape pocked with bomb craters into a haven for recreation. Wöhrder See stretches over 2.6 kilometers, reaching from Wöhrd to Mögeldorf and Erlenstegen. It’s a two-part harmony, the Unterer (Lower) and Oberer (Upper) Wöhrder See. The Unterer Wöhrder See, spanning 1200 meters with a maximum width of 450 meters, welcomes pedal boats and leisurely pursuits. Its northern shore is traced by the Johann-Soergel-Weg, a popular path for walkers, joggers, and cyclists. Meanwhile, the Oberer Wöhrder See, stretching approximately 1400 meters, is a sanctuary for wildlife, a quieter space where nature takes center stage. Did you know that nestled at the western end of Wöhrder See, a small hydropower plant harnesses the water’s energy, contributing to Nuremberg’s power supply? It’s one of five such plants in the city. Wöhrder See isn’t just a place of recreation. It’s a vibrant ecosystem, a haven for swans, geese, ducks, and even cormorants and herons that have established colonies along its shores. Every year, the lake’s shores come alive with the Wöhrder Kärwa (fair) and the Wöhrder Seefest (lake festival). The rhythmic pounding of thousands of feet echoes around the lake during the Nuremberg City Run, a major sporting event held each October. As you stand here, appreciating the beauty of Wöhrder See, remember the stories it holds. A testament to human ingenuity, it stands as a symbol of resilience, transformation, and the harmonious coexistence of nature and urban life.
