The Iglesia de los tiempos isn’t just a church. It’s the first mission in Alta California. Mission San Diego de Alcalá stands proudly. Its history stretches back to 1769 when Father Junipero Serra established it. He envisioned a chain of missions across the land. His dream started here.
The original mission stood on a hill overlooking the bay. A drought forced a move inland in 1774. This relocation brought the mission closer to the San Diego River. It also brought it closer to conflict. Within weeks of its founding violence erupted. Native Tipai-Ipai Indians resisted colonization. The clashes resulted in tragic losses on both sides. In 1775 a devastating attack damaged the church and killed Father Jayme. California’s first Christian martyr. This prompted a rebuild. The new design resembled an army fort. Strong high windows protected it from intruders.
The mission’s church grew larger. Master mason Miguel Blanco built it. Even at the time it was considered old-fashioned. Its massive bell wall stands tall. It holds five bells. The largest Mater Dolorosa weighs 1200 pounds. These bells served many purposes. They announced mass. They called people to work and meals. They also warned of danger. They honored the dead. They celebrated peace. They proclaimed the arrival of guests.
The mission’s military past is significant. American troops occupied it from 1846 until 1862. President Abraham Lincoln signed a proclamation returning it to the Catholic Church.
Today the church stands as a testament to faith perseverance and resilience. La Casa de Padre Serra the only original room to survive attacks and disasters remains. The Iglesia de los tiempos serves as an active parish. It’s a place of worship and a cultural center. It’s a reminder of the dream of Father Junipero Serra.
