Across the bustling Oranienburger Straße, the Postfuhramt stands as a testament to Berlin’s rich postal history. The Postfuhramt, or Imperial Mail Delivery Office, isn’t just a beautiful building. It’s a time capsule, whispering stories of horse-drawn carriages, pneumatic tubes, and the birth of cinema. Constructed between 1875 and 1881, the Postfuhramt showcases the Italian Renaissance Revival style. Its yellow clinker brick, accented with turquoise and terracotta tiles, stands out amongst the modern architecture. The three domes, a nod to the nearby New Synagogue, add a touch of Byzantine flair. The Postfuhramt wasn’t always a grand edifice. It began humbly in 1713 as a simple house for the Postilion, a precursor to our modern postal system. By 1766, it evolved into a post office with stables. However, tragedy struck in 1874. An outbreak killed numerous horses, highlighting the dire need for a new, modern facility. This unfortunate event spurred the construction of the Postfuhramt we see today. The architect, Carl Schwatlo, adorned the building with 26 terracotta busts. These busts depict figures crucial to postal and communication history. From Darius I to Gustav Robert Kirchhoff, their faces watch over the Postfuhramt, silently narrating the evolution of communication. The Postfuhramt also played a role in the dawn of cinema. In 1894, Ottomar Anschütz held the first public showing of life-sized moving pictures within its walls. The Postfuhramt embraced modernization. In 1925, the horse stables were replaced to accommodate a new era of motorized transport. The building also housed a pneumatic tube mail system, or Rohrpost, which zipped messages across the city until 1976. World War II left its scars. The Postfuhramt suffered significant damage, narrowly escaping demolition in the following decades. Thankfully, extensive renovations in the 1970s restored its former glory. The Postfuhramt continued to serve as a postal hub until 1995. It then transformed into a space for art exhibitions, even briefly housing the 1st Berlin Biennale. While the building has since been sold to Biotronik, a medical technology company, its exterior remains largely unchanged, a protected landmark since 1975. As you stand before the Postfuhramt today, take a moment to appreciate the stories etched into its walls. From humble beginnings to a symbol of innovation, the Postfuhramt has witnessed Berlin’s transformation, standing as a silent observer of the city’s ever-evolving narrative.
