Tucked away on Hang Vai Street, Dong Thanh Temple patiently awaits discovery. It’s more than just a beautiful building. Dong Thanh Temple embodies Hanoi’s rich history. It stands as a testament to the city’s resilience. Dong Thanh Temple, also known as Hang Vai Temple, holds a special place in Hanoi’s Old Quarter. It’s not just its beauty that captivates. It’s also the sheer size and historical significance that sets it apart. The temple is dedicated to Huyen Thien Tran Vu. This deity, revered in Oriental culture, is one of the four gods protecting the cardinal directions. Tran Vu is also associated with Thang Long, Hanoi’s ancient name. Legend says he guarded one of its four gates. Dong Thanh Temple’s story takes a dramatic turn in December 1946. During the Winter National Resistance War, it served as an ambulance station for Inter-Region I. For 60 days and nights, the temple played a vital role in the resistance. This marked the beginning of the national resistance war in Hanoi. Time took its toll on Dong Thanh Temple. By the early 2000s, after more than two centuries, the temple had fallen into disrepair. Parts of it were used as offices and even residences for twelve families. Fortunately, in October 2011, the Hanoi city government stepped in. They initiated a restoration project, breathing new life into the 200-year-old structure. Today, Dong Thanh Temple has regained its spiritual significance. People come to participate in ceremonies, and tourists from around the world admire its restored beauty. In 2014, the temple’s historical and architectural importance was officially recognized. It was designated a historical and architectural monument of Hanoi. So, as you stand before Dong Thanh Temple, remember its multifaceted history. It’s a place of worship, a symbol of resilience, and a testament to Hanoi’s enduring spirit.
