“North Highland Presbyterian Church” doesn’t sound very exciting does it? But trust me. This place has a story. North Highland Presbyterian Church stands as a testament to community spirit and architectural evolution in Denver.

Let’s step back to 1887. Highland Park Presbyterian was born. It was initially named Boulevard Presbyterian. The church served the Highlands and Sloan’s Lake neighborhoods. By the 1950s, it boasted 1500 members. They first met at city hall. Then they gathered in a tent on this very site. In 1897, the original congregation erected a corner structure. Two additions followed over time.

Now picture another church. North Presbyterian began in 1925. It was located about a mile away on Federal Boulevard. This church had close ties to the Free Masons. It also flourished reaching 1700 members in the 1950s.

Fast forward to 2010. A significant change occurred. North Presbyterian and Highland Park Presbyterian churches united. They dissolved their separate identities. They became North Highland Presbyterian Church.

Look around at the architecture. Notice the red brick. The mid-century design is striking. Architect J. Johnson designed this addition in 1955. It was built to accommodate a growing congregation. The style is Modernist. Modernism rejected ornamentation. It embraced minimalism and structural expression. The church showcases new construction technologies. Glass, steel and reinforced concrete are prominent. The boxy shape catches the eye. So does the flat roof. Horizontal eaves add to the design. Large brick panels are framed by exposed steel. The large windows feature gridded and abstract patterns. Glass block is also used. Inside you will see the use of wood veneer.

But the story does not end with architecture. In recent years, North Highland Presbyterian Church faced challenges. A renovation project at The Highlands Center stalled. The Highlands Center is sponsored by the church. It provides space for local businesses and organizations. A subcontractor walked out. This left the church needing $20000 to complete repairs. The church even considered selling the buildings.

Despite these hurdles, North Highland Presbyterian Church persevered. It transformed itself into a community hub. About five years ago, the church changed its approach. It became a space for progressive and creative programs. It currently houses several partners. These include a yoga studio, a Buddhist meditation center and a music academy.

The sanctuary was once filled with wooden pews. It served as a center for worship, music, society and culture. The downstairs assembly hall has always been versatile. It hosted banquets, classes, dances and children’s events.

North Highland Presbyterian Church is more than just a building. It is a symbol of community adaptation. It is a blend of architectural styles. It represents resilience in the face of adversity. It’s a safe space for the neighborhood. It’s a place where good things happen. Its story is a testament to the enduring power of faith and community.
