Nestled in Póvoa de Varzim, the Escola Secundária Rocha Peixoto has witnessed a century of history. Right here in Praça Luís de Camões, this school stands as a testament to the city’s growth. The Escola Secundária Rocha Peixoto’s story began in the 19th century. Póvoa de Varzim was a bustling hub. It was the most popular beach in northern Portugal, drawing crowds for six glorious months each summer. The city was also a major fish market, trading both fresh and salted catches. This vibrant economy attracted merchants from all over. It created exciting opportunities for young people. In 1924, the city recognized the need for formal education in commerce and industry. The “Escola Industrial Patrão Sérgio” was born. The name quickly changed to honor a distinguished local figure. António Augusto da Rocha Peixoto, a renowned scientist, became the school’s namesake. The Escola Industrial e Comercial de Rocha Peixoto began its journey. Its early years were tumultuous. There were name changes and even a brief suspension. Yet, the school persevered, reflecting the resilience of the city itself. In 1930, due to low enrollment, the industrial courses were discontinued. The school became simply the Escola Comercial de Rocha Peixoto. This shift mirrored the local economic landscape, where businesses hadn’t yet fully realized the value of specialized training. Public services were actively recruiting graduates from commercial courses. This further reduced demand for industrial education. By 1948, the school reclaimed its original focus, becoming the Escola Comercial e Industrial da Póvoa de Varzim. The Escola Secundária Rocha Peixoto we see today finally emerged in 1979. The school underwent a major modernization in the late 2000s. The renovations included a new management building and a state-of-the-art sports pavilion. Today, the Escola Secundária Rocha Peixoto continues to serve the community, upholding its motto: “A school for all, always more and better.”
